A Staggered Roll Out

The Surface Hub 2 will be released in two different iterations, Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 2X. Microsoft is planning to start shipping the Surface Hub 2S in the second quarter of 2019. In 2020, the Surface Hub 2X will be released and available on a removable processor cartridge. The Surface Hub 2S can then be upgraded to the Surface Hub 2X by inserting the processor cartridgwoe into the hardware chassis on the back of the device.

Surface Hub 2S Features

The Surface Hub 2S is a 50.5-inch, 3:2 ratio, 4K-plus touchscreen, which Microsoft says is now “lighter, sleeker, and more intuitive than its predecessor”. It has improved microphones, speakers, 4K camera, video calling features, and can be shared across multiple operating systems, including Windows 10, iOS, and Android. Video conferencing will be available through Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams. Microsoft’s new Whiteboard app will offer many other features that will improve the large screen experience. In addition to the Surface Hub 2S now being slimmer and lighter, Microsoft has partnered with steel case to offer rolling stands and wall mounts for easy portability around the office.

Surface Hub 2X Features

The Surface Hub 2X will offer some very exciting new features, including seamless rotation between portrait and landscape modes for even more creative versatility. Tiling will allow multiple devices to be hung side-by-side, in either portrait or landscape mode, to create one larger screen. Another great new feature is multiple-user sign in with fingerprint authentication. The Surface Hub 2X will be powered by Microsoft 365 – an integration of Windows 10, Office 365 and Enterprise Mobility + Security.
